Located in Mussolente, Veneto region at a 150-200 mt latitude on a hill surrounded by woods, olive trees and a small pond sits Calalta run by Nicola Brunetti. Their white vines are located in the east because the morning light helps them to preserve their acidity. The vineyards are characterized by a high density of planting (7800 vines per hectare). This promotes radical competition between the vines that instead of propagating their roots horizontally go deeper, drawing nourishment from different layers of soil. This mainly affects the complexity and persistence of the wines. To increase soil fertility they do not use chemical fertilizers, but practice green manure: sowing a mix of grasses and legumes between the rows, letting them grow until flower to provide nourishment to the soil and favor the presence of bees and ladybugs that act, respectively, as pollinators and antagonists of the parasites.
